We are sharing this both for the talking points, and to show that the coalition of groups and organizations opposing these 4 bad telecom bills is broad and growing.

Dear CWA District 9 Family,
CWA District 9 is opposing SB 556 (Dodd). This bill would require local governments to grant wireless companies access to public property at unfair, below-market rates and would risk worker and public safety by shortening permitting timelines, all while doing nothing to address the state’s digital equity crisis. CWA has opposed this type of policy at the federal level and opposes it here.
We recognize the need for broadband service across the state, especially in underserved and remote areas, but this bill does nothing to help the underserved. There are no obligations for the industry to install broadband facilities, or make broadband service affordable. We need expanded wireline networks to serve those left behind, not corporate giveaways that only exacerbate existing inequities. CWA has opposed this type of policy at the federal level and opposes it here.
SB 556 is going to be heard on Wednesday, June 9th at 1:30 in the Assembly Local Government Committee. We’re asking that you contact all the Committee Assembly Members and ask them to please vote NO on SB 556. Let their offices know you’re with CWA and you’re asking that the Assembly Member vote NO on SB 556 because it’s a giveaway to big corporations on the backs of workers, residents, and communities. If you’re unable to do it until after business hours, that’s ok. Just leave a message.
